A milestone land release from the ACT Government’s City Renewal Authority will re-shape the City Centre, creating a mixed-use precinct that supports pedestrian connections with the lake.
The future development – located across from QT Canberra Hotel – will form a gateway to the City Centre when travelling along Commonwealth Avenue from the south.
City Renewal Authority Acting CEO Craig Gillman said the focus was on delivering a high-quality place fitting of its significant location.
“This land release will further revitalise our City Centre and provide centrally-located office or hotel space, retail, and residential component” Mr Gillman said.
“The site is perfectly placed between the city and the future Acton Waterfront neighbourhood. It takes advantage of the project to raise London Circuit and extend light rail to Commonwealth Park – with a stop planned on its doorstep.”
Mr Gillman also said significant ACT Government investment in nearby infrastructure further underscores the landmark opportunity.
“This will locate more employment and economic activity in the heart of our city, drawing more people to key renewal areas such as the Sydney and Melbourne Buildings and the Canberra Civic and Culture District,” Mr Gillman said.
“We look forward to sharing the outcome of this land release process and will ensure an attractive and sustainable development that supports a range of private and public uses.”
The site – known as Block 1 Section 121 City – spans the 18,959m2 area between Vernon Circle, Edinburgh Avenue, London Circuit and Commonwealth Avenue. It is currently being used to support the project to raise London Circuit.
The sale is being run by JLL over two stages, with the first stage (request for EOIs) closing at 4pm on 4 July 2023.
