Training to respond to child abuse and neglect
Sign up for training if you work or volunteer for an ACT organisation that works with children.
You may need to do training if you:
- work or volunteer for an ACT organisation that works with children
- are a mandatory reporter.
Before you can start
You must get access to the ACT Government online training website (called HRIMS Learning).
- Fill in the ACT Government mandatory training portal form.
- Wait for the email inviting you to set up your password for HRIMS Learning. This may take 3 to 5 days.
- Follow the instructions in the email to finish setting up your access.
- Log in to HRIMS Learning to start your training.

Keeping children and young people safe training
This online training is for government or non-government staff who work with children and are mandatory reporters.
If you work for a childcare centre, your employer may ask you to do the training. You can give them a copy of your certificate to show you’ve done it.
This online training takes about 1 hour. You'll learn:
- roles and responsibilities of reporters
- how Child and Youth Protection Services (CYPS) responds to child abuse and neglect
- what you should and should not report to CYPS
- how to report concerns of child abuse and neglect
- what happens after you report concerns to CYPS
- how to respond to a child who tells you they have been abused
- other ways to support families.
You must log in to HRIMS Learning on a desktop computer to sign up and start the training. You cannot log in or do the training on a mobile device.
Register for Keeping children and young people safe
Responding to child abuse and neglect training
This training is for government and non-government staff who work with children and are mandatory reporters.
The training goes into more detail on physical, sexual and emotional abuse, neglect, and exposure to domestic violence.
The training is in-person and takes about 6 hours on one day. It will help you:
- consider your values and attitudes about abuse and neglect
- understand current legislation that governs the safety and protection of children and young people
- explain how to make a child concern report
- describe indicators that may suggest child abuse or neglect is happening.
You must log in to HRIMS Learning on a desktop computer to register for the training. You cannot log in or do the training on a mobile device.
