Learn about Priority Enrolment Areas (PEAs) and find a school in your PEA.
Canberra is divided up into what's called Priority Enrolment Areas (PEAs). Each school has a number of suburbs and areas assigned to it. This is the school's PEA.
Your PEA is determined by your home address. This means your child gets to attend a school near where they live.
Why your Priority Enrolment Area is important
From kindergarten to year 12, every ACT child is guaranteed a place at a public school within their PEA.
You can apply to a school outside your PEA, but you may not get a place. Find out about applying to a school outside your area.
Some suburbs are zoned to more than one school. If you live in a ‘shared zone’, your child is guaranteed a place at one of your PEA schools but it may not be your preferred one. Find out more about Priority Enrolment Area shared zones.
If you live in nearby NSW, you are guaranteed a place at a NSW pathway school.
If you apply to a public preschool (attached to a public primary school), you are guaranteed an offer. Usually, this is from your preferred school or a school within your PEA, but not always. Some preschools are in high demand. Read about enrolling in 4-year-old preschool.
Specialist schools, specialist preschools and early childhood schools do not use PEAs as part of their enrolment process.
PEA changes
Shirley Smith High School opened in 2024 with changes to PEAs for Kenny and Throsby.
- For 2025, Shirley Smith High School is open to enrolments for years 7 and 8.
- In 2026, the school will be open to enrolments for years 7 to 9.
- If you live in Kenny or Throsby, and you submit a PEA application for year levels not currently offered by Shirley Smith High School, your application will be forwarded to Harrison School, based on previous PEAs.
- If you live in Downer or Watson, you can also apply to Shirley Smith School, in addition to your other PEA schools.
Aunty Agnes Shea High School opened in 2025 with changes to PEAs for Moncrieff, Jacka and Taylor.
- Moncrieff, Jacka (north of Appleford Ave) and Taylor are now in the PEA for Aunty Agnes Shea High School.
- PEA applications for year levels not currently offered by Aunty Agnes Shea High School will be forwarded to Amaroo School (for Moncrieff and Jacka, north of Appleford Ave) or Gold Creek School (Taylor), based on previous PEAs.
- For 2025, Aunty Agnes Shea High School is open to enrolments for year 7 only.
We expect that Aunty Agnes Shea High School will offer:
- year 8 enrolments from 2026
- year 9 enrolments from 2027
- year 10 enrolments from 2028.
The new primary school in Strathnairn will be delivered in stages, starting with Preschool to Year 2. You can enrol in Preschool to Year 2 for the 2026 school year.
- Holt (Chester Close, Fullston Way, Lionel Rose Street and Lorraway Street only) will be in a shared PEA zone for the primary school in Strathnairn and Kingsford Smith School. All other addresses in Holt remain in the PEA for Kingsford Smith School only.
- Macnamara will be in a shared PEA zone for the primary school in Strathnairn and Kingsford Smith School. Macnamara has been removed from the PEA for Macgregor Primary School.
- Strathnairn will be in a shared PEA zone for the primary school in Strathnairn and Kingsford Smith School. Strathnairn has been removed from the PEA for Macgregor Primary School.
