Apply for a nursing and midwifery scholarship
If you are a nurse or midwife in the ACT you can apply for the following scholarships:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Enrolled Nursing Scholarships
- Postgraduate Nursing and Midwifery Scholarships
- Professional Development Scholarships
- University of Canberra Graduate Certificate Scholarships
The ACT Government is also offering financial support for students through the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Study Incentive Program.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Enrolled Nurse Scholarships
The Office of the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, ACT Health and the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) sponsor 2 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Enrolled Nurse Scholarships each year.
Scholarships are awarded for a period of up to one calendar year only.
This scholarship is offered under the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) National Partnership Agreement on Closing the Gap on Indigenous Health Outcomes.
How to apply
- Read the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Enrolled Nurse Scholarship guidelines [PDF 346 kB].
- Ask an appropriate referee to fill out the referee form [Word 802 kB].
- Complete the application form.

Postgraduate Nursing and Midwifery Scholarships
These scholarships support your ongoing professional education and skill development.
Scholarships for postgraduate tuition fees are offered to support:
- clinical education
- research
- leadership and management scopes of practice.

Professional Development Scholarships
ACT Health promotes a learning culture through the Nursing and Midwifery Scholarship Scheme to enhance the ongoing professional development and skill levels of staff across the organisation.
The ACT Health Nursing and Midwifery Professional Development Scholarship program is managed by the Office of the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer.
Scholarships for professional development are offered to support:
- conference attendance
- course participation
- innovation projects.

Maternity in Focus Workforce Scholarship Scheme
This scheme supports health professionals involved in maternity care in the ACT. It funds their professional development courses.
Courses must align with the Maternity in Focus: First Action Plan 2022-2025. These priority areas are in the applicant guidelines – see page 9.
You can get financial support for a course you’ve completed or will begin this financial year.
Applications are now closed. 2025-2026 applications open in early February 2026.

University of Canberra scholarships
The University of Canberra offers a scholarship to contribute to the cost of a Graduate Certificate in Health Research for staff employed in allied health, and nursing and midwifery at ACT Health Directorate or Canberra Health Services
This program is facilitated by the ACT Health Directorate, Office of Professional Leadership and Education in partnership with University of Canberra.
If your application is successful, you will receive 50% of course fees towards study. You will be billed for this by University of Canberra.
You must pay the extra costs including the remainder of the course and amenities fees.
The scheme is not available every year. When offered, a limited number of places are available and successful recipients are selected by a panel.

Graduate Certificate in Health Research
The scholarship supports your transition to health science research.
The course explores subjects including:
- epidemiology
- how to perform statistical analyses
- the qualitative and quantitative practices of the research process.
Study support
If you work for ACT Health Directorate or Canberra Health Services you must complete the ACT public service studies assistance application for approval as a student. You may be eligible for work area supported study leave.
University places subsidised by the Australian Government
Domestic students undertaking the Graduate Certificate in Health Research have access to Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs).
CSPs are university places subsidised by the Australian Government. Read the information for the relevant course for more information.

Synergy Nursing and Midwifery Research Centre scholarships
The SYNERGY Nursing and Midwifery Research Centre is a joint venture from ACT Health and the University of Canberra supporting the development of a research culture in ACT public health services.
The centre works with Canberra nurses and midwives to:
- encourage engagement and collaboration
- achieve regular outputs in key focus areas
- enhance collaboration with key stakeholders
- establish international links with other centres
- develop a strong and successful cohort of higher degree research students.
