The Salthouse Community Centre will open in Haig Park next month, providing a shared space for creativity, learning and connection.
The centre has been named in recognition of the late Sue Salthouse.
Nestled into the park landscape north of Mort Street in Braddon, the striking, modern building is an adaptive reactivation of the park’s 1950s depot shed and enables an array of community activities. The centre is for all Canberrans to enjoy, contributing to Haig Park’s ongoing evolution to a family friendly destination.
From recycled wood and brick materials to wheelchair-accessible rooms and other inclusive features, the facility has a special focus on both sustainability and accessibility.
This is in line with Ms Salthouse’s legacy and her advocacy for people – particularly women – with a disability. Features include:
- a large multi-purpose room for gatherings
- a large community room for creative workshops
- another meeting room
- ambulant and wheelchair-accessible bathrooms
- kitchenette with servery
- wheelchair-accessible barbecue and picnic tables
- a public garden.
Ms Salthouse was named the ACT’s 2020 Senior Australian of the Year in recognition of her work, before sadly passing away in an accident later that year.
Northside Community Service has been selected to operate the new centre with plans for an open day in the coming weeks.
The open day will be an opportunity for the wider community to explore the new centre.
More information on the Salthouse Community Centre can be found on the City Renewal Authority website.
