It’s been a stellar year for Luna, with the celestial name Canberra’s most popular for both dogs and cats.

Daisy and Charlie, the second and third most popular dog names, also ranked among the top 10 for our feline friends.

There were plenty of one-of-a-kind pet names registered this year. One of 2024’s most creative (and most challenging to call out at the dog park) was Stroobie Baloo First of his Name, King of the Pittospuram, Chaser of Birds.

We also love a pun, with Vivienne Westwoof, Billie Howladay and Indiana Bones Jnr making an appearance.

Some of our pets have even earned titles, including Admiral Fuzzy Paws, Dame Luna Persephone Von Garrad and Sir Michael Caine.

Canberra’s reputation as a foodie capital extends to our pet names, with Baguette, Chickpea, Cabbage, Miso, Meatball, Affogato and Mimosa among those registered.

The ACT loves ‘oodles’ of all varieties with the cavoodle remaining as the most popular dog breed for the third year running. Groodles and labradoodles also made the top 10.

Annual registration is compulsory for all cats and dogs over the age of 8 weeks and it’s free for owners to update their pet’s registration details.

Not only does animal registration provide an insight into the most popular pet names and breeds, more importantly, it helps reunite lost pets with their owners.
