Traffic travelling along the Barton Highway

Road users may be affected by traffic delays, particularly during the peak morning period.

09 September 2024

In brief:

  • There will be protest activity in Canberra on Tuesday 10 September 2024.
  • This is expected to cause traffic delays.
  • Patrons attending the UniSport Nationals at EPIC should allow more travel time.

Canberrans are encouraged to be aware of potential travel impacts in the city centre, EPIC precinct and Parliamentary Triangle tomorrow (Tuesday 10 September) due to protest activity for the live sheep export ban.

A convoy of trucks and smaller vehicles will enter Canberra early in the morning via the Barton and Federal Highways, and transit between Parliament House and EPIC throughout the day.

The approximate timeline for the activity is:

8am-8.30am – truck convoy enters Canberra via Barton Highway and Federal Highway and travels to State Circle via the following route:

  • Federal Hwy-Northbourne Ave
  • Left on Cooyong St (turning into Coranderrk St)
  • Left onto Parkes Wy
  • Right onto Monaro Hwy
  • Left onto Hindmarsh Dr
  • Left onto Canberra Ave
  • Left onto State Circle.

9.30am-10am – Convoy travels to EPIC from State Circle via the following route:

11am-1pm – event at Federation Mall.

1pm-2pm – buses return to EPIC.

2pm onwards – convoy leaves Canberra.

Traffic delays

Road users may be affected by traffic delays, particularly during the peak morning period.

Traffic congestion from 8am is expected along the route between the corner of Barton Highway and State Circle.

Motorists are urged to either allow extra time or find a detour to avoid these locations.

Public transport impacts

There may be impacts to bus and light rail services including the morning school bus runs.

Customers should plan ahead and allow extra travel time due to the potential delays.

Diversions will be in place in both directions for routes 57 and 58 in the Parliamentary Triangle.

Bus stops at Parliament House (2586 and 2587), Federation Mall (2245 and 2246) and Langton Crescent (1778 and 1777) will not be serviced until the protest activity has cleared.

Alternative bus stop information can be found on the Transport Canberra website.

Passengers should check NXTBUS for real time travel information throughout the day.

EPIC Precinct

Unless required, Canberrans should avoid the EPIC precinct as delays are expected.

Patrons attending EPIC for the UniSport Nationals event should enter via:

  • Gate 1 (pedestrians and light rail) and
  • Gate 2 (vehicles, pedestrian and light rail) on Flemington Road.

While we don’t expect any impacts on the UniSport Nationals, you should allow a little more extra time to travel to the venue.

Trucks and light vehicles participating in the convoy will be directed to enter EPIC via the back carpark via Old Well Station Road.

All vehicles entering EPIC are reminded to observe the traffic management plan in place around EPIC.
